Tokyo, Aug 9 (efe-epa).- Japan remained on alert Thursday due to typhoon Shanshan that has made landfall and is advancing over the country’s eastern coast with heavy rains and gusts of wind, leading to the cancellation of more than 250 flights and disruption of other transport services.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the 13th cyclone of the season in the Pacific, Shanshan, was advancing Thursday to the prefecture of Ibaraki (northeast of Tokyo), at 9.00 am and is headed north at 15 kilometers per hour (9.3 miles per hour).

Tokyo Narita Airport and Sendai Airport, in northern Japan, among others, Thursday decided to cancel around 104 domestic and international flights, while on Wednesday, when Shanshan made first landfall, 160 flights were suspended due to winds that reached 180 kph.

Until Friday morning Shanshan is expected to cause some 157 millimeters of rain in some areas of Saitama (north of Tokyo), and 127.5 millimeters in the northeastern city of Fukushima, according to the JMA.

It has also recommended caution because of expected high tides and waves along with gusts of winds of up to 126 kph that the typhoon will bring in its slow progress over the next 24 hours.

The East Japan Railway Company warned that some train services will be interrupted on certain routes.

Although no damage has been reported so far, four people were injured Wednesday, and Chiba authorities in eastern Tokyo issued an evacuation order affecting 97,000 residents.

In the midst of this new storm, Japan is still recovering from the torrential rains a month ago which hit the southwestern part of the country with heavy flooding and landslides, causing the death of 224 people.
