Durban, South Africa, Jan 12 (efe-epa).- South Africa’s ruling party, led by the African country’s president, launched its election manifesto on Saturday during a big event to mark its 107th anniversary.

Economic development and job creation are key elements of the manifesto presented by African National Congress, which has been ruling the country since the establishment of the democracy in 1994, at the Moses Mabhida stadium in the eastern city of Durban.

“The 2019 elections provide us with an opportunity to restore our democratic institutions and to return our country to a path of transformation and development,” South Africa President and ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa said during the event.

The ANC considered economic transformation, access to the health system and education as the cornerstones of its electoral campaign, but also stressed the need to tackle gender-based violence and racism among other social plagues.

South Africa is to hold general elections in May and poll surveys carried out late in 2018 suggested the ruling party could achieve 59 percent of the votes.
