China urges restraint, compares Syria strike to Iraq intervention

CHINA SYRIA CONFLICT | 16 de abril de 2018

Beijing, Apr 16 (efe-epa).- China on Monday compared a recent joint strike in Syria by the United States, France and the United Kingdom to the military intervention in Iraq and urged the countries to learn from past mistakes.

China said Saturday's military strikes violated the United Nations Charter and was against international law.

"Have we forgotten the lessons of the Iraqi issue? Historical lessons should be remembered," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a press conference in Beijing.

Hua added that while senior officials from these countries have accused the Syrian government of carrying out chemical attacks, Beijing believes "such statements, to criminalize Syria and to justify military actions, lack legality and legitimacy."

The spokesperson also underlined that China opposed the use of chemical weapons "for whatever purpose, under whatever circumstance, by any country, organization and individual," and supported "a professional, unbiased and objective investigation" to find out if the Bashar al-Assad regime used them.

Hua said that the Syria conflict could only be resolved politically, and the use of force would only add to existing instability in the region.
