UN political affairs chief meets North Korean foreign minister in Pyongyang

NORTH KOREA UN | 07 de diciembre de 2017

Seoul, Dec 7 (efe-epa).- The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs met North Korea's foreign minister in Pyongyang on Thursday, North Korea's state-run agency KCNA reported.

The meeting between Jeffrey Feltman and Ri Yong-ho took place during the former's visit to North Korea to meet senior officials in the Kim Jong-un-led regime, which began on Tuesday and is the first trip by a UN official to the isolated country in over seven years.

Ri held a "conversation" with Feltman, who also paid a courtesy visit to the Supreme People's Assembly (North Korea's parliament), the agency said in a brief statement.

Feltman's visit comes barely a week after North Korea launched its most sophisticated intercontinental ballistic missile to date, an action that may lead to a new round of UN Security Council sanctions.

The UN undersecretary-general for political affairs was also scheduled to meet other representatives of the North Korean regime to discuss matters of mutual interest and concerns, the UN said, without providing further details.

He will also meet diplomats in Pyongyang as well as the UN team in North Korea, where the UN operates six agencies with 50 international staff.
