Afghanistan says Trump has hurt Muslim sentiments across the world

Kabul, Dec 7 (efe-epa).- The president of Afghanistan on Thursday expressed his deep concern over United States President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying that it hurt the sentiments of Muslims across the world.

Afghanistan "has already shared its deep concerns through the diplomatic channels with the leadership of the United States," Ashraf Ghani said in a statement, stressing that it puts "the peace process of the Middle East in danger."

Ghani said that any unilateral move in the Middle East "without involvement of Palestine and the independent state solution" will not result in positive results and a durable solution.

The Afghan government has until now been in sync with the Trump Administration, which in recent months has increased US military presence in Afghanistan to support the fight against the Taliban.

On Wednesday, Trump went against international consensus on Jerusalem by recognizing it as the capital of Israel and ordering the US Embassy in the country to move there, causing increased tensions in the region and compromising Washington's role as a peace broker.

The United Nations, the European Union and major Arab nations, among others, rejected Trump's decision, which however was welcomed by Israel.

The Afghan Taliban, which is engaged in the ongoing conflict in the country, on Thursday labeled Washington's announcement an act of anti-Muslim fanaticism.
