Death toll rises to 31 in Northern California fires

USA FIRES | 13 de octubre de 2017

Los Angeles, USA, Oct 12 (efe-epa).- At least 31 people have been killed by one of the most devastating wildfires in Northern California, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported Thursday.

Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano said in a press conference Thursday afternoon that 17 bodies have been found so far in his jurisdiction, 10 of whom were identified as citizens between the age of 57 and 95.

Giordano added that the authorities have received reports of about 1,100 cases of missing person, 745 of whom have been located and in safety.

Firefighters and emergency services have made small and slow progress against the fires that remain active and widespread, devastating more than 77,000 hectares in total.

The largest active conflagrations are currently in Atlas, Napa and Solano counties, which in the last 24 hours have remained relatively stable and razed nearly 18,000 hectares.

As of Wednesday, at least 3,500 buildings had been destroyed by the blazes, including homes and shops, and more than 20,000 people had been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The counties of Sonoma and Napa, known for their vineyards and wine products, are two of the most affected areas.

Flames have reached some parts of Santa Rosa, a city of 175,000 people located about 90 miles north of San Francisco.
