US vintage cars are stars of Miami's CubaNostalgia fair

USA CUBA | 19 de mayo de 2017

Miami, May 19 (efe-epa).- The popular US vintage cars of the 1940s and '50s, still seen driving around the streets of Cuba, play the leading role at the CubaNostalgia fair, which opened Friday in Miami.

The three-day event, to be held at the Miami-Dade Fair Expo, presents more than a dozen of those vehicles, whose owners belong to the Antique Automobile Club of America.

Among the classic cars on show at the fair, which expects to attract some 30,000 visitors during its three-day program, is a 1931 MG convertible, a 1941 Chrysler Sedan and a two-door Pontiac Catalina that came off the assembly line in 1950, all with their original parts.

The stardom of these four-wheel relics is illustrated in the poster created by artist Cesar Santalo.

The CubaNostalgia program, which commemorates the independence of the Caribbean country that is celebrated every May 20, includes the screening of the 2017 documentary "Cuba sobre Ruedas" (Cuba on Wheels) by Rene Alvarez, dedicated to the history of the automobile on the island from 1898 to the present day.

The fair offers the chance to savor the island's finest dishes, drinks and cocktails, and move to a Cuban beat in a dance contest whose prizes consist of plane tickets to anywhere.

In a space of more than 50,000 sq. feet (more than 4,600 sq. meters), the so-called "Artists Plaza" exhibits paintings and photos along replicas of the streets of Havana.

Music will be provided by the Santiaguera group, by salsa star Willy Chirino, and with the participation of TV show host Lucy Pereda, who maintains a blog all about healthy eating.

The program includes stage acts, an installation with the vintage cars as its central theme, plus an exhibit of historic front pages of the daily El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language version of the Miami Herald, which this year celebrates its 30th year on the newsstands.

Those attending the event "can buy old discs, Cuban movies of the 1950s, and old books, postcards and T-shirts that recall that era. But more than all that, they can enjoy this wonderful Cuban atmosphere," said a press release from the organizers.
